Senior Technical Writer

Are you a collaborative technical writer who loves taking complex information and turning it into easy-to-understand content? Do you have experience with structured authoring and/or working in a content management system? Do you get energized by delivering the best possible content to your audience? We’d love to hear from you!

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Writer - someone who has mastery of technical writing, experience in understanding the differing needs of multiple audiences, and the ability to adapt their writing and content accordingly. This person will tackle everything from writing and updating release notes to building out product manuals from scratch. They have the ability to synthesize multiple inputs and feedback from stakeholders into cohesive content. They also mentor junior writers.

What is the Technical Writing team like?

We’re in the process of growing the Technical Writing team at Blackline Safety. We currently have a manager and one technical writer. With all the growth Blackline has seen over the past few years and the number of upcoming projects, we are looking to add at least one more technical writer to our team.

What is the toolset like?

The Technical Writing team currently uses Word, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Teams and SharePoint. We are in the beginning stage of implementing a content management system, such as MadCap Flare or DITA. We collaborate in person with whiteboards and screen share when we’re working from home. We chat and share GIFs with MS Teams.

What makes you a great fit for this position?

  • You have at least seven years of experience as a technical writer, preferably in IT or writing product manuals, and ideally you have some experience with (or at least an
  • You understand the concepts and importance of document/content management.
  • You are good with simplifying complexity. Our audiences range from internal stakeholders to external end users. To be successful, you will know how to put yourself in the audiences’ shoes and adjust your writing style to meet their needs.
  • You have written a variety of content types, including manuals, procedures, support/knowledge base articles, troubleshooting, and release notes.
  • You have a keen eye for detail and are willing to champion tone, structure, voice, and the style guide in the content that you develop.
  • You have experience and enjoy working with SMEs, from initial interview through to final approval.
  •  You prioritize collaboration and communication. We work closely with many other Blackline teams, as well as within the Technical Writing team. You enjoy working with others and contributing to the success of the team as a whole.
  • You are open to change. Our technical writing processes are in development and are likely to change as we mature. You are excited to contribute to developing and implementing these processes and are willing to reassess and adjust the processes to optimize them over time.
  • You enjoy learning new skills. We are in the beginning stage of implementing a content management system. You are excited about the digitization of content and are eager to learn the new system.
  • You enjoy working to a style guide and are willing to actively contribute to, and follow, it to create the best possible content for our customers.

What are other skills you might bring to the table?

  • In addition to all the above, you are self-directed and flexible. You can take a broad outline of what needs to be done and work with SMEs to produce high-quality content that meets our internal standards.
  • You have graphic design and illustration skills (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • You have web publishing experience (WordPress, HubSpot, or equivalent).
  • You are happy to mentor junior writers.
  • You have some editing/writing quality assurance experience and are willing to edit and check others’ work to ensure consistency in voice, tone, structure, and style.
  • You regularly check-in to ensure projects are on track and are open to adjusting your priorities as needed.
  • You are happy to lend a hand. Some of our work is helping other teams improve their content and working within their processes. You have a positive attitude and are willing to go the extra mile for the company.

We're looking for a technical writer who has

  • A minimum of seven years of work experience in technical writing.
  • A diploma or degree in related field (technical writing, information design, English, communications, etc.)
  • Great problem-solving skills with an ability to communicate complex ideas in clear and concise ways.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Eligibility to work in Canada or the United States. Our team works business hours in the MST time zone.

We prioritize applicants who have

  • 7+ years of technical writing experience
  • Experience with structured authoring and/or content management systems
  •  Experience with editing/quality assurance
  • Experience working at a medium to large-sized business and with cross-functional teams
  • A writing portfolio showing different content styles
