Pulp and Paper Toxic and Combustible Gas Hazards

  • Main gas hazards
  • The chemical pulping of the Kraft process in digester units that breaks down wood chips into pulp releases H2S from lignin.
  • From the delignification process, the H2S used can become entrained in the plant steam lines.
  • The bleaching process uses Cl2 and ClO2 (or less commonly, O3). 
  • After bleaching, removing the chlorine requires SO2 to wash the slurry.
  • Recovery boilers mix black liquor with salt cake which generates a chemical smelt with risk of explosion. 
  • Pulp is sent to burner decks to be dried, requiring methane / natural gas (CH4) to heat the burner and presents a combustible gas hazard
  • Confined spaces in paperboard mills, tanks and silos (to name a few) can have toxic atmospheres and need proper testing and monitoring if a CSE is required.  

On average, there are ten worker fatalities per year in the U.S. pulp and paper industry.
