Real-Life Incident: Mike's Story - Heat Illness While Working Alone

Blackline SafetyLeader in Connected Gas Detection & Lone Worker Safety August 19, 2026

Mike fights heat stroke and Blackline helps support and send emergency response.

I can't even get out of the truck." An electrical contractor becomes too sick to reach help just steps away.

It seemed like any other workday.

Mike, an electrical contractor with a power company, had spent all day working outdoors at a construction site. But on the drive home he began to feel unwell, and as he pulled into the hotel parking lot, his condition worsened.

It started with vomiting. Then came the sweats and severe cramping along his sides and abdomen. Within minutes, he realized this wasn't simple dehydration, but most likely heatstroke.

Although he was parked just a short distance from the hotel, he was too sick to even climb out of his truck.

With no coworkers nearby to check on him and his condition worsening, he reached for the emergency SOS latch on his Blackline safety device.

One Pull. Immediate Response.
Blackline Live and G8 help connect workers to emergency response when they need help.

Within seconds, the SOS alert was received by Blackline's 24/7 Safety Operations Center (SOC).

An SOC agent responded immediately and established two-way voice communication with Mike’s device to assess the situation.

SOC agent“This is Blackline’s SOC. We’re received an SOS alert from your device. Everything OK?"

Mike“I'm not feeling well. I can't even get out of the truck”

Mike explained his symptoms—severe cramping, vomiting and overwhelming fatigue from the heat. Realizing this was a serious medical emergency, the SOC agent immediately dispatched emergency responders while notifying the worker's designated emergency contact.

But she didn't stop there.

Knowing he was alone and becoming increasingly distressed, she kept talking with him throughout the incident.

She reassured him that help was on the way, encouraged him to keep breathing steadily, asked whether he had water available, and continued talking with him to keep him calm while monitoring his condition.

SOC agent“We will talk about everything and nothing until they(EMS) comes," she said. "It will help you take your mind off the cramps."

She remained on the line until EMS arrived, only ending the call once she knew Mike was safely in their care.

Every Minute Matters

Heat illness can escalate quickly. Confusion, loss of coordination and even unconsciousness can develop with little warning.

Connected Safety Means You're Never AloneBlackline Safety's device's helped a worker than was stranded in his truck with heat stroke.

When people think about lone worker technology, they often picture vulnerabilities from gas exposures, falls or workplace
accidents.

But health emergencies can happen just as suddenly.

In this case, a single pull of an SOS latch connected a lone worker with a real person who stayed with him through his distress—coordinating help, providing reassurance and making sure he wasn't alone until responders arrived.

Although help was physically close, it wasn't accessible to someone who couldn't even leave his vehicle. In moments like these, a direct connection to someone who can coordinate emergency response—and stay with you until help arrives—can make all the difference.
