Lone Worker
Safety Devices

Workers out of sight should never be out of mind.

Protect your people with a lone worker safety solution
that has their back when they're on their own.

A lone worker safety device is a wearable monitor that safeguards people working beyond the sight and sound of others.

If a worker falls, has a heart attack, or gets trapped in a freezer, the risk is that no one knows about it until it's too late.

Blackline's lone worker safety solution ensures visibility into a wearer's safety status, and immediate response if something goes wrong. Devices detect falls, no-motion, and missed check-ins automatically, and enable workers to call for help, share their live location, and talk to a real person during an emergency. Every alert streams to our Blackline Live platform for real-time monitoring, rapid incident response, reporting, and analytics.

The Situations that Bring Teams Here:

  • A near miss or incident:
A man down incident happened, and no one knew until it was too late. Your safety program needs automatic detection instead of scheduled check-ins, like how GCWA turned a close call into 100% compliance.
  • A coverage gap audit:
Meter readers, operators on rounds, drivers between sites: the workers a check-in schedule quietly fails, like in Sasha's story.
  • Sudden health events:
Even the best safety programs can't predict a medical emergency. Fall and no-motion detection buy workers the minutes that matter, like in Marco's story.
  • Intrinsic safety requirements:
Phones and consumer grade devices fail requirements in gas environments. Blackline's intrinsically safe wearables don't.
  • Remote site coverage:
Workers outside of reliable connectivity require devices that reach further and stay online.

Navigating worker pushback on tracking?

Adoption rises when devices are correctly positioned as a lifeline, not a surveillance system. Our location and data access settings are fully configurable in Blackline Live.

The Connected Safety Difference

Instant communication, connectivity, and zero blind spots are no longer optional for comprehensive safety programs.
Connected safety is the new standard, and for good reason:

anna-story-icon-heart

Lone working conditions are more common than many realize:

Driving between jobsites, a night shift delivering packages, inspecting a remote section of pipeline, locking up at the end of the day, or simply working in a separate area of an otherwise busy facility can all result in a worker being out of sight and contact with others.

Connected technology makes lone work easier and more common; it must also support making lone work safer.

Missed Check-In

Check-Ins are not enough:

Most lone worker programs still rely on scheduled check-ins: call every two hours, text when you arrive. But a lot can happen between those moments. If a worker checks in and has an incident one minute later, it could be nearly two hours before a missed check-in signals that something is wrong.

Automatic detection closes that gap. A connected device can detect a fall, no motion or a missed check-in and escalate the alert automatically, even when the worker can’t ask for help.

24/7 Monitoring

24/7 monitoring, by real people, means no calls get missed:

A call for help is only useful if someone is there to hear it. Every alert from active lone worker devices can route to your own control room, to Blackline's in-house, Five-Diamond Certified Safety Operations Center (where 99% of calls for help are answered in under 60 seconds), or to a global Alarm Receiving Center partner.

Responders can speak directly to workers through their lone worker device, and follow your custom emergency response protocol from receipt to resolution.

FAQs

What defines a lone worker?

A lone worker is anyone who works where they can’t be seen or heard by others, even for a few minutes: a technician on a remote site, a night-shift operator in a large facility, a driver between stops, a meter reader in the field. Isolation, not distance, is what defines lone working.

Can phones and radios provide sufficient lone worker safety coverage?

A phone or radio requires a conscious worker with a free hand, a signal, and battery in order to help protect a lone worker.

Purpose-built lone worker devices detect events like falls, no-motion and missed-check-ins automatically, work hands-free, meet intrinsic and ATEX safety requirements that a phone can't, and connect workers to trained monitoring personnel during an emergency.

Blackline's Lone Worker devices integrate push-to-talk, text messaging, and emergency voice communication, which cover the essential functions of radios and phones on the job, while adding more robust safety features.

What are the differences between Blackline's G8 lone worker and G8 gas detection models?

Both devices are built on a shared base.

G8 Lone Worker is configured for connectivity, location, worker safety status, and communication. A G8 gas detector offers the same features, with an added single or multi-gas cartridge that can be configured for various gas hazards.

A fleet of G8 lone worker devices can easily be transitioned to detect gas simply by adding a swappable sensor cartridge to the device.

What happens when a lone worker alarm is triggered?

When a manual or automatic alert is triggered on a Blackline lone worker device, an alarm emits locally while simultaneously streaming the alert, worker identity, and live worker location to Blackline Live.

Monitoring personnel (yours or Blackline's) contact the worker to validate their status, escalate per your protocol, and can dispatch local emergency services to the exact location if required.

With Blackline AlertLink, nearby worker's devices can also be notified of an alert in their proximity and respond accordingly.

Do Blackline worker safety devices operate without cellular coverage?

Blackline worker safety devices require connectivity to operate to their fullest intended extent.

For workers and sites outside of reliable cellular connection, Blackline G7x can pair with the portable G7 Bridge to use Iridium satellite connectivity up to 2 km from the base station.

GPS location services can work independently from other connectivity, and devices equipped for gas detection will provide gas readings and high-gas alarms on the device itself regardless of connection status.
